Islands Galore!

Explore Mackerel and the Montebello's

The Mackerel Islands consist of 10 islands, with Thevenard and Direction Islands, as part of the Pilbara Inshore Islands network and are accessible to tourists. Visitors can stay at the resort on Thevenard Island. Some choose to sleep aboard their own vessel hidden amongst the plethora of stunning island jewels of the Montebello Islands. Visitors come to enjoy the crystal clear blue waters, idyllic weather, world-class fishing, diving, snorkelling, whale and nature watching. The islands are home to whales, dolphins, turtles, and thriving birdlife. This network of Islands is a hidden treasure of the WA coastline.

The Mackerel Islands is located 12 nautical miles offshore from Onslow, and incredibly popular fishing ground for those who have access to a boat.

Better yet - stay a few nights on Thevenard Island or the Montebello Islands, a group of 174 small islands, are also located approximately 75 nautical miles off the Onslow coast.

Located off the Pilbara Coast 139km north of Onslow, the Montebello Islands Marine Park covers more than 58,000 hectares of ocean and over 250 low-lying limestone islands and islets.

The area is rich in natural marine diversity and human history, and fishers, snorkellers and divers are attracted to its coral reefs, colourful tropical fish, wildlife and maritime heritage. The only way to access the Montebello Islands is by boat. Camping is allowed on Primrose, Bluebell, Crocus, Hermite & Renewal Islands (year-round) & Northwest Island (April-Sept); within 100m of hightide mark, up to 5 nights. No pets or open fires.

The Montebello Islands gained fame for hosting the 1952 and 1956 British nuclear tests. Due to slightly elevated radiation levels on Trimouille and Alpha Islands, visitors should restrict their visits to one hour per day.

During whale migration season (July and August), the waters here are abundant with humpback whales.
